Thoughts On Life or something.

HI I'm SNOWED IN. lolo. (with like, half a foot of snow it's arizona and my car is tiny shh). So here is something I've been thinking about the past few days and I desire to share. Also, this is pre-emptively long and not proof read. I an notorious for making typos, especially of the is/isn't variety. READ IN CONTEXT, be understanding. And I will proof read when I get home.

This is... okay it's advice! I PRE-EMPTIVELY APOLOGIZE BEING ARROGANT ENOUGH TO THINK I HAVE ANYTHING USEFUL TO SAY TO ANYONE but. Mm. I do! And these are just my thoughts regarding a lot of common issues I see with players. Please take it with a grain of salt! I mean nothing but happiness and hope for everyone. This isn't YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG these are just thoughts, opinions, and hopefully helpful tips I believe in due to my minimal and unexciting amount of life experience. But... still things I've noticed and changed about myself over the years. WHICH IS REALLY BROAD this is not a guide to life just some thoughts that hopefully might make YOUR ROLEPLAY EXPERIENCE I HAPPIER ONE.

POINT THE FIRST: Have some self confidence! There is a difference between humility and self deprecation. I notice a great deal of both in this RP. One is fine! One is AWESOME. Because there is also a difference between pride and self confidence. And both lines are precarious ones to walk. But... the one I notice FAR more in camp (and in my corner of INTERNET LIFE) is the former.

Being humble is great. Everyone likes humility. But... the difference between the two, I believe, is that one implies that don't think you're All That and are cool with it, and the other is an effort to put yourself down. Whether you put yourself down because you are afraid that by rising above others you will piss them off, or because you genuinely don't like yourself, I think it all adds up to the same thing. I don't think ANYONE wants to be unhappy. I don't think ANYONE wants to think poorly of themselves. But when you often and publicly seek to remind not just others but yourself of your various failings they are always right in front of you. It's hard to believe in yourself when you constantly put all the ways you can't possibly be a great person out there for everyone to see. I say this from personal advice of spending a year or two telling people in detail why I was a horrible writer, only to find that when I showed them my (horrible!) writing all they could see was how horrible it was. And I had no one to blame but myself. If you want my honest opinion, I'm pretty 'ehn' on my own writing, I see the flaws, I know where I need to improve, I have a fabulous creative writing instructor who points these things out to me in a nice and reasonable manner. But if I were to tell all of you all the time what those flaws are, you would look for them everytime you read anything I wrote (which, is not often, but this is an example!). This applies in roleplay and life in general, I believe. No, you aren't perfect, you aren't and you never will be and nor will anyone else. It's okay to have flaws! It's excellent to want to improve of them. But it's wholly unnecessary to make sure you and everyone else around you is always aware of them.

Acknowledge them, see them, ask yourself why they are there, what you can DO about it, perhaps seek advice from friends. Better yourself! But don't hurt yourself by never letting yourself or anyone else see past your flaws. You have lots of wonderful things about you too.

Which brings me to!

POINT THE SECOND: It's okay to be praised! This one is a LITTLE HARDER since I think there is this natural thought that if someone complements you and you DON'T push that complement away it means you agree! But! "Wow you are SO AWESOME" "y thank you!" is not the same as "Wow you are SO AWESOME!" "Omg you have no idea." And okay. The second one is something I would say factitiously. BUT. My point is. It's... okay to accept a complement. It's okay to be thought well of. And not EVERYONE DOES THIS but I do see it quite a bit, not just in game but again in the intranets in general.

We aren't a society, I think, that complements off handedly. If we say it we probably really mean it (unless we're being lying manipulative bitchwhores BUT THAT'S A DIFFERENT THING). So if it's anything from "I like your hair" to "You are the most amazing player of (XXXX) that I have ever seen!" the person is probably being honest. You may not agree! You may hate your hair and frequently question your ability to play character (XXXX) but it's alright to let other people like it. It's alright to let someone make you feel good about yourself. There are a million and seven things in life waiting to stab your self confidence in its face, from looks to money to boyfriends to society in general thinking we are failures for liking anime and manga at our age and spending too much damn time on the computer. Don't pass up the chance to have a good feeling when someone presents it to you.

And, when someone gives you a good feeling? Thank them. It's only polite.

POINT THE THIRD: You can't give offense, only take it! Okay that is a corny old saying I don't think is entirely true. There are PLENTY OF PEOPLE OUT THERE who, when stirred into the right amount of ire, whether it be blinding fury or self righteous anger, will do their damned best to piss you off and hurt you and cause offense. And it can take an either blindingly positive attitude on life, a goddamn mountain of self confidence, or skin like stone to withstand that without taking offense. Most of us will never achieve these things and will have to suck it up and periodically be offended in life. But we can be a offended A HELL OF A LOT LESS if you keep in mind the only thing you can control is your perception.

Which, I believe, is true. You can argue with people, you can write them essays, underscore facts, present scenarios and be as polite and persistent as possible but you cannot make them understand, agree with, or care about your opinion. This applies, I think, in any form of criticism you may receive online, from how that thread last night turned out to OMG YOU ARE WEEABOO BITCH or whatever they are calling annoying fans these days. You can try your best to be thorough in your explanation, to approach something from every possible angle. You can be verbose as all FUCK in effort to try to communicate whatever to whoever (re: Aviy). But you cannot make them understand. This isn't just the internet. This is humanity in general.

Miscommunication, I think, causes a large majority of problems everywhere. So detailed communication (in my very obvious opinion) is the best way to avoid that. Being as honest and thorough as possible. But in the end there are no guarantees, you can't work everything out, and periodically you will not have the time or interest or will power to try.

In which case? At least realize that you can never control their perception, just yours. Additionally, no one is happy when you're angry. Well, perhaps some people get a little high on it. But most? No. And most importantly? You are not happy when you are angry. It's a poor way to punish others because chances are it stresses you out far more than them. For your own sake, control your perception. Choose to view things in the best possible light, give people the benefit of the doubt, give yourself the benefit of the doubt. Understand some you can never please and be satisfied with pleasing yourself, keep in mind that sometimes people have a point and maybe you are bullshitting yourself and be open to change, because lying to yourself isn't good for you either. And most importantly, be mellow. Don't allow yourself to think the world is out to get you, don't become sure people hate you when they haven't come up to your face and said "I hate you". Paranoia has its advantages, like, not living under a social rock like Aviy. But happiness and security are not among them. And if someone DOES do something you feel was just wrong? Note it, it's okay to not AGREE with people, just don't get your panties in a twist if you don't have to.

I do think anger CAN be liberating, and sometimes you just have to scream it all out. Hell I know I have. But what I'm talking about is not so much repressing your anger is gradually learning to shift the way you look at things so they no longer make you angry. And you may think it's impossible but it really quite IS. Your mind is much like the rest of your body, and you can train and control it and change it. You CAN learn to not jump to negative conclusions, not get defensive every time something might possibly be negative about you is said, and not judge or worry deeply about the opinions or others when they haven't been shoved right up in your face.

But, in the event that it is truly a time that you can't just zen your way out of it?

POINT THE FOURTH: Deal with your issues! I think gradually you will get to know yourself, your situation, and what needs to be dealt with and what will go away on it's own. I do believe most storms will pass, and that given time it just honestly won't be a real issue anymore. As an example, I rarely have fights with my family at all, but I did a few years ago have a rather bad one with my mother over the legality of homosexual marriage. There was crying and raring and it SUCKED because I never fight with my mom and so it's all very traumatizing for me. We never resolved that, we never went back to it, the only time we ever mentioned it again was to agree not to talk about it. And. I'm fine with that. I would LIKE my mom to agree with me, but many years of living with my mother and watching her shift has taught me that if I leave it alone, she will not have forgotten my stance on things and what I said and perhaps five years down the line will have her own experiences and perceptions change enough that she agrees with me. None-the-less, for a little while this was a HUGE AND IMPORTANT THING TO ME. But left alone I genuinely believe it will work itself out.

But not all issues do. And I'm not talking deep political or religious arguments here. I'm talking having a fight with player X over event Y, both parties are pissy, probably only see it from their own point of view and don't feel like they have had a chance to properly explain why THEY are right and are sure if they can only say THEIR side the other party will surely agree. Or if they don't they're just a bitch.

Or hell, someone said something that hurt you! Or did something you didn't like. We get lots of issues in lots of places. Little things we tell ourselves are stupid that none-the-less chew away at our soul and make it hard to interact the same with that person again. But we just sit on it, instead of dealing with it, because we don't want to make a big deal out of it. Or are just scared of making them angry, or them hurting us more. But... it pretty much always hurts worse in the long run. You can lose friendships like that, lose people you used to like to play with, lose fun times to be had for all because something is always there, gnawing, and you just aren't all that comfortable with it.

So. Deal with it. Deal with it NICELY. Yelling at people, accusing them, throwing it all in their face is not dealing. It's perfectly alright to go "Hey this thing happened and I want to work it out so it doesn't bother me anymore so LET'S JUST TALK until it's all good again". Which is. Pretty much how I always handle things since I'm insanely direct. But you know? I think people appreciate honesty. Or that's what I tell myself to keep living life the way I do. But it rarely comes back to bite me so I think I'm not too wrong there.

Similarly. Assuming a neutral or even nice tone will not cover it up if what you are basically saying is "This is all your fault". People are not blind, they can tell. Cruelty is not simply swearing and anger can be represented with sweet words and your side of the issue is not the only side. If you truly want something to WORK OUT you need to be open to understanding others. This is part of shifting your perception. Sometimes we have certain ideas we just can't let go of (mine, ironically, tends to be around these things I'm saying right here!) but... remember how MUCH you have grown in life, how many things you used to never understand but do, how many things you've learned to love or hate or just not be as passionate about anymore. We're all young, in ten years maybe I will think what I've written here is a bunch of horse shit. Everyone is at a different place in life, understanding different things, caring about different things. Understand that in regards to any problem. Sometimes, you have to admit you were wrong, other times you just have to understand that different things hold different levels of importance to you, and be okay with that, work with it, and move on. Friendships are worth this guys, and it isn't a bad way to move through most of life's dealings as well. I think.

And finally!

POINT THE LAST: Happiness isn't a gift, it's an accomplishment. I know tragically few people who seem to be honestly happy. This also isn't just CFUD but the internets and life in general. I see a lot of people making their way, hanging on for this retirement benefit or keeping their job because they have bills to pay, dating people they don't love because they are afraid to be alone, ending up in marriages with children when they never understood what it was to commit to someone for life. This isn't to say these people are miserable all the time. They laugh, they have fun, they enjoy themselves, they have friends. But having some happiness and BEING HAPPY are vastly, vastly different things.

I'm not going to tell you what is worth what in life. That's up to you. But to me the only real purpose is to relish and love what we have. We're all going to die, tomorrow or at age 114 in bed surrounded by great grand kids. But I would hate to think that after 114 years you would look back and think "man, I was never happy with myself". Some people find happiness in accomplishment, in DOING, in leaving their mark on society and history. I... don't. I know I don't because I've never accomplished anything, I'm putting off work at this point to write this (the plow came through and cleared the roads about fifteen minutes ago). I've never had a really great IRL friend. I've never been on an amazing adventure. I've never done anything amazing with the ideas I love. I would LIKE to accomplish many wonderful things and be even happier and more successful. But right now I'm 21 and working for 8 dollars an hour, I live with my mom, I dropped out of highschool, have a GED, no college degree, and didn't finish NaNoWriMo or any of the fics I owe various people. A great many people would call me a failure and I couldn't completely blame them.

But I'm happy. I'm happy to say I'm happy. I hope one day to be HAPPIER STILL but. I'm happy. Right here right now with all of my flaws and un-success.

Happiness is not a timeline. It is not an event. It is not a person. I think the last one has the BEST CHANCE of helping you find happiness! Because people effect each other. But there is no magic switch in life that will make everything better. I don't believe it is an age, or a year, or moving away from your parents or getting that job you've always dreamed of. These things can perhaps make it EASIER to find. But you are never going to magically lose all the things that stress you out. If it's not family it's bills, if it's not work it's weight, if it's not looks it's boys (or, girls!). Life is going to perpetually full of concerns, obstacles, and heartache.

I believe happiness is just a perception. Again, you can take offense or leave it? You can be happy about something or not. Not, to say, you got a funeral and are thrilled. But sadness is it's own happiness. Appreciate what there is to life. Love yourself, you're the only you. See your virtues as well as your flaws, and let other people see them too. Believe in yourself, because there won't always be someone there to believe in you. Keep your priorities in mind. Being happy, grateful, and excited should always come before being angry, vengeful, or apathetic.

Lots of people in the world have everything they should ever want and aren't happy with it. Many amazing people have far less than we could imagine and love every inch of their life. It's not a matter of being grateful for what you have. Fuck what you have. Just be happy anyway. This is your only life, and only you can choose to enjoy it.

End of Canon Essay

S-So, Trigun Maximum has ended.

Yes, you heard me. That canon that, if you are like me, you were first introduced to in your early teens and has been going on for what feels like most of your life, has ended.

It hasn't quite SETTLED INTO MY MIND YET. But these last few chapters have effected my view on Vash, so I'm just going to. ...ramble about that here.

First of all, I haven't SEEN the final chapter yet, but I've read a coherent summary for it and I don't think seeing it will make any significant changes on how I view Vash, which is the point of this.

To cover briefly what HAPPENS. Vash chooses to save Knives life instead of kill him. This... honestly surprised me. We do see moments in canon to suggest that Vash HATES Knives, that he fully intends to kill him. Hell, he says outright that he can't forgive Knives. And KNIVES HAS DONE ALOT, OKAY. If the fact that he's slaughtered hundreds of millions of humans isn't enough, he's personally shredded Vash's soul, by killing Rem, by killing a town for his sake, by forcing him to use his Angel Arm not once, but twice, the first time resulting in the death of a hundred thousand people that Vash loved. Knives has done a lot to hurt Vash and I honestly believed Vash would kill him.

The fact that Vash had the moment, that Knives wanted him to take it and chose to instead save Knives's life and use the last of his life energy to get him to safety kind of... solidified everything Vash is to me. I love him more than ever for that. It makes the final, obvious punch that Vash's love and forgiveness really is superhuman. It's not ignorant, it's not naive or hopeless. Vash NEVER denies that Knives is a bad person, never argues that humans can be horrible, he just persists in believing in them inspite of this. No. Matter. What.

Incidentally, Vash sprouts wings to fly Knives to safety. So uh. Another character who can fly if they want. GG Nightow.

But then Vash runs out of power and one wing fades. Knives (who is also nearly dead) produces a wing and TOGETHER THEY FLY OFF INTO THE SUNSET.

After that starts the new issue, which I haven't seen. I'm... disappointed in it because apparently Knives and Vash don't TALK. AT ALL. And fuck I've been waiting the ENTIRE SERIES for a real conversation between them. But... Knives uses the last of his life force to give to Vash so that Vash can live. Knives disappears.

...I really wanted Vash to die. Infact I've been playing him with the assumption that he does die, because frankly, there is no character who deserves a glorious death more than Vash. Furthermore, I was under the impression that while Vash can be HAPPY, a happy life can't really touch him the way it can others. He's a hundred and fifty years old. His life has been incredibly shitty, he expresses, more than once, a desire to rest, to be done.

After that there is a ten year skip. Vash's hair remains black instead of blond (which is, IMO, waaaay hotter) it also means that if he ever uses his PLANT powers again he will die. But without Knives or the Gung-Ho Guns to threaten, that's not likely to happen soon. Vash lived the first one hundred and fifty years of his life without ever using his abilities willingly. Vash goes back to his normal life, being wanted, saving lives, being goofy and fun and capable and loving people.

So what's changed for me?

Well. I think I've seen Vash as being too cut off. He DOES distance people, this is undeniable. Infact he gets lectured in volume twelve for being a jerk who tries to do everything on his own and when confronted with he just goes "Please stop! You'll only confuse me!" And I never DOUBTED that Vash loves people, genuinely. I think he's just... more willing to be close to them than I realized. He loves people and WANTS to be loved and if he's cut off it's because he lives in a world that isn't ready for his brand of caring. And also because he IS willing to leave them, is willing to die, or move on or let go for their sake. But that's not necessarily the same as not caring as much in the first place. Vash has, I think, a very careful balance which is no balance at all. He loves as much as he can, helps as much as he can, and the only thing he holds back from is them loving him and that's just because he doesn't want to hurt them when he inevitably leaves. But he doesn't hold back for his own sake at all.

HOWEVER. He's still Vash and he can't care about one person more than another. Which means exclusive relationships are still impossible for him. But I'll be more careful about how he distances himself for people. The key here it's okay for him to care as much as he wants, and it's okay for other's to CARE, they just can't care so much that they would be in any way crippled by his leaving. Because, he always leaves.

As for emo levels... Hm. It's hard to say. The fact that things are finally OVER does... a lot for Vash. But it still doesn't take away the fact that his life has been incredibly shitty, that he his only remaining family is dead for his sake, that he's still wandering, that some people's lives are even worse than his, that there are people out there who kill without thought or regret. He's... happier than he's been in a long time, but he's still got emo. He's just not as sensitive about it now unless you push certain buttons. He'll probably be a little less fake in camp because of this. More honest and more refreshed. While I think a part of Vash really did kind of want to die, he DID promise Meryl to return, which means he didn't intend on dying. And... Well. Vash loves life. He loves helping people. He loves having fun. Nothing can change or take away what has happened for him, but he can deal with it better when he's in a good place, and camp is a good place. So he'll probably emo less and be more open.

As far as Knives on Vash... now that I know Knives is dead, and Vash knows Knives is dead, he'll probably be more willing to talk about him. He's still not going to bring it up, he will always be edgey and vague when talking about himself or his life. He KNOWS his life sucks, he doesn't want to bring you down because of it. He also finds reliving memories physically painful (talking to him about July WILL MAKE HIM CRY) and thus, tries to avoid the bad ones. But he'll tell people who Knives is and give him a very, very vague idea of the things he's done, and an impression that he's dead now, so it's resolved, if nothing else.

He's still not going to volunteer that he's a PLANT. There is a part of Vash that does and always will fear being rejected for not being human, and so he's not going to just go around telling people about it. Additionally he doesn't see it as important, in a way. He KNOWS humans and PLANTs aren't so different. He just... doesn't feel inclined to tell people that and use himself as an example, especially when he's the only PLANT in the area.

As for what I'm going to have to retcon now that the series is over, and where I'm officially taking Vash from?

I'm taking Vash from immediately after his brother gives him enough life force to live, and thus dies. Vash would still be almost dead at this point, but he would know, even if he doesn't see it himself, that Knives is gone, and for his sake. That he won, that his great battle is resolved, that the people from Earth are aware of the people of Gunsmoke and will one day seek to retrieve them again.

It's a good time to zap Vash over to camp and restore him his powers.

His powers ARE restored for... well. One I WOULD LIKE TO USE THEM IN CAMP ONE DAY WITHOUT VASH DYING BECAUSE OF IT. But also? Because while I think the black hair is REALLY HOT and would happily edit my icons to reflect this? The Vash that we all knew and love and grew up with is the blond one. And that's who I apped. And I feel wrong changing that. If camp events happen which cause his hair to start to turn black again, that's one thing. But for now? He stays blond.

As for retconning... there isn't much. I've been playing from the assumption that Vash defeated his brother, WHICH HE DID. Knives did not die at Vash's hands, but it was Vash's empathy which overpowered his brother's hatred, causing the PLANTs which were giving Knives all his power to turn away from him, and thus destroying Knives. Vash is sad that Knives died, but he realizes well... there WERE other options, and that's not the road Vash would have chosen. He would have died there and let Knives live. But he does respect his brother's choice, and will use the gift given to him fully.

I've also been playing with the assumption that Vash would die (IT SEEMED LIKE A SURE THING, OKAY) but since I'm smart I never outright said this. I DID SAY that Vash can't return to Gunsmoke, which is inaccurate at this point. He can. I'm not entirely sure he would, but he might. Humans there still need help, protection, and love. They need someone to be patient with them and care for them. They are still the same people Rem died for and nothing about that has changed, even with Knives gone they are still a danger to each other, and in danger from the elements. BUT. Vash doesn't love the people of Gunsmoke just because Rem died for them. He loves the people at camp too and he wouldn't abandon them easily. However, Gunsmoke is way more dangerous and, given the chance, he probably will go back. He... really has nothing else to do. It's basically what he is.

But he's not angsting over not being there, because he's focusing on doing good here. He isn't dodging bullets or saving lives so much, but he's effecting lives for the better and this is good too.

It's also a nice little happy vacation after all the shit he's been through in the past one hundred and fifty years.

Appearance Meme

Clothing/appearance:
Vash wears his coat anytime he's in public. If you're one of the few people who would have any rights to visit him in his room (Wolfwood) you might catch him in his pajamas, but pretty much? Coat. The coat has like a zillion buckles and buttons and so no, you can't ninja him out of it, mostly because he has Appearance Issues. Of note is his left arm, which is buckled around with black leather so much that you can't see the prothetic, but he can bring out his gun without breaking these straps. And on his leg he wears almost knee high boots and then his legs are strapped with leather and buckles too. UNDER the coat he has something like a space-age body suit, which involves even more buckles! But it leaves his arms bare.

His hair does, infact, do that on its own. He doesn't gel it. And except for purposes of comedy, it's pretty soft okay =\

Habits/mannerisms/body language:
IT'S ALL RELATIVE. Vash can either pick people up, hug them, lean on them, drag them around and be ALL UP IN THEIR BUBBLE or he can maintain a personal space of at least ten feet. The way he acts around you depends entirely on you and his immediate mood.

However, as a general sort of bar, the more you are emotionally close to Vash, the less likely he is to be in your bubble, and the more likely he is to be a whiny bitch at you. He's more likely to bubble invade cute kids who need cheering up or yelling at, he's equally likely to yell at ANYONE unless you are SUPER CUTE. And he will put up with just about anything from anyone, but he'll whine while you abuse him.

But in any AVERAGE situation, Vash will stand a fair distance away from people, possibly with his hands in his pockets. Unless he's capslocking or exclamationing, he isn't loud (he can get VERY loud). He smiles a lot but his smiles are typically fairly fake (but he's good at not looking like they are). He doesn't do much in the way of hand gestures unless he's failing or pointing. He's very tall and tends to lean vaguely to one side or another when he's standing still.

Current Residence:
Chapel

Typical Daily Routine:
Wakes up before dawn to enjoy the day. Does physical exercise for two hours, meditates for three seconds. SINGS. LOUDLY. BADLY. The entire chapel can hear this =D Then he showers and goes to breakfast in the mess hall, where he takes all his food. He eats alone or with people, depending. He'll either sit with someone who calls him over, sit with friends or find some lonely person and hang out with them.

Every day Vash will work in the Chapel garden, visit Vanessa, exercise (evening and night), shower twice (evening and night) and eat food and outside of that has no set schedule. He delivers his weather report once a week. Noisily. In his free time he mostly visits people, or reads books or plays checkes with the gorillas. You can assume he see Abel, Wolfwood, Gwendal and the Hitachiin once a day, and he probably bugs Ikkaku whenever he happens upon him. He avoids Meryl whenever he can and talks to Peony when he sees him around.

Since Sanzo left there is now no one bestowing wisdom and helpful advice upon the young, anonymously distressed teenagers at camp with their endless troubles in the area of YUU ESS TEE. But don't worry, I'm here to help!

The grating over Vash's heart was put there after he nearly died by being shot in the chest (for the third time). A doctor suggested it because it would stop most bullets.

Vash chose his own name, so did Knives (Vash the Stampede and Millions Knives)

Vash spends a lot of time wishing he'd been an only child.

Unlike Ed, Vash takes very good care of his prosthetic arm. That and his revolver are cleaned every evening.

Vash can read five languages (English, French, Japanese, German, Italian) but can't speak any of them very well. Plus his German and Italian ar really rusty, he had a lot more use for the other three over the years.

Though we call him a PLANT for the sake of simplicity, he's not exactly, and Vash doesn't know exactly what he is either.

Vash actually covers up his body to save other people embarrassment more than himself. It's not the kind of thing people like to see =\

That said, Vash is a jack of all trades and only a master a gunmanning. He always seeks out other people for any kind of trade skill. His boots, coat, guns, arms and pretty much anything else he keeps with him are custom made for him by the best of the best.

Vash has a rose, a kitty hat, a stuffed cat and a rain stick. Though they weren't all meant as gifts, he treats everything left with him as a gift. However, he doesn't like to keep things for himself so if someone else wanted any of these things, Vash would give them away freely.

Vash still has the rose he got from Umeda. He keeps meaning to let it die naturally, but every time it starts to wilt he gets weak and pokes it with his energy until it revives again. Of all the things he's received at camp, that's what he's most attached to, and would hesitate the most before giving it to someone.

Speaking of red flowers, if Vash ever finds geraniums the entire Chapel will be surrounded by them in a month. In a perfect world, Vash would only use his super mega PLANT powers to make flowers grow.

Vash doesn't protect the zombies or the wildlife, but he doesn't kill them himself.

It takes roughly two shots of his Angel Arm to make Vash's hair start to change. Doing the math, he can shoot it three times being using up his life.

Vash was born roughly around the year 2407. He's now (again, roughly) 150, making his time 2560-ish AD.

Both times Vash has used his Angel Arm, his psychotic twin brother basically raped him into it. The first time resulted in the deaths of a hundred thousand people.

Day in the Life/What Vash Does When I'm Not Playing Him

Vash wakes up somewhere around dawn to a gorilla knocking at his window. He politely thanks the gorilla and tells him that he'll go to breakfast as soon as he finishes his morning routine. He and the gorilla have An Understanding.

Vash spends exactly three seconds reaching a zen state on life, the universe and everything. And love and peace. Then he spends the next two too three hours working out. This includes finger pushups (VASH HAS YOUR NUMBER, SHIN), pullups, sit ups, and balancing fragile objects on the tip of his gun while doing flips with his eyes closed and various other weird gun ninja shit.

Then he takes a shower and goes to breakfast.

Feel free to assume you talk to Vash at breakfast. He's very socialable and probably is talking to SOMEONE most mornings. He eats whatever is being served and thanks the chefs every time and spends the next hour or so eating and making a fool out of himself.

Vash then spends the next several hours until lunch wandering around, talking to people and helping with whatever he can. IF YOU EVER WANT TO ASSUME THAT YOU'VE ALREADY MET VASH, BY ALL MEANS, just ping me so I know. Cause like. Wandering around helping people makes up about 90% of his free time.

Vash does not restrict his socializing to the living! He's been known to dine with zombines and lunch with gorillas and yes, he's met Marcy. They're on good terms.

Vash also wanders around SNOOPING. I.E. He was recently lost in the labs for a week where he located a PLANT. Snooping usually results in Vash running for his life.

Vash visits the church. He also LIVES in it but it's not the same. He will stop by once a day to once every other day, and stay there for anything ranging from a few minutes to about an hour. If you can't find Vash well... okay no he's probably NO in the church he's probably running around the Caves of Despair screaming like a girl. But if you can't find him THERE he's probably in the labs and if you can't find him THERE he's probably in the church. Vash in the Church is Busy. Emoing. Do not Disturb.

Vash keeps up with posts! He doesn't read comments a whole lot, but he reads most posts in a general effort to keep up with what's going wrong, and in the event that someone need help he can lend to them? He's there (ONLY NOT REALLY CAUSE I HAVEN'T BEEN THAT ACTIVE. He's there in spirit).

He will probably look in on Gwendal and/or Wolfood at least once a day to make sure they're alive and not killing each other/breaking up.

And otherwise he basically screws around until nightfall, at which point he repeats all of his morning exercises again, takes a shower again, and tends to any new wounds he got during the day. Then he gets in his PJs and goes to bed!

Stuff I Remember

Stuff I keep in mind when playing my characters, stolen from Wolfwood and done for the same reasons as him.

FIRST OF ALL for all my characters I have certain moments in their canon that I keep filed away for the purposes of character voice, and I call up on them whenever I feel like I might be losing my footing.

For Lina this means basically just remembering the first ten or so pages of the book, which do a SUPERB job of summarizing the character that Lina remains as for the rest of the novels. The book starts with her side stepping the issue of WHY bandits are chasing her, she eventually admits to it but it takes her like, three pages of rambling to get there. She casually mentions offing the bandit boss (on accident, kind of, as in she didn't CARE if he survived that fireball or not), progresses to her pokingly negotiating with one of the bandits after her, shows her being aware of hidden enemies (the bandit claims to have guys in tree with arrows pointed at her and she's like, lol no there aren't bitch), shows her being perfectly confident in her ability to take on a dozen armed men single handedly, has her bitch mentally about the bandits HORRIBLE dialog... infact when Gourry shows up she actually grades his lines vs the bandits (Gourry wins, albeit only barely). It shows Lina having absolutely no problem with a tall handsome knight 'saving' her, she even goes so far as to play up the damsel act by squealing for help, and later shows Lina being a bit disappointed (and hurt, and miffed) when Gourry calls her 'just a little girl' BUT despite that also shows Lina being grateful for Gourry's completely unnecessary help, so much that she puts up with his insulting misconceptions and lets him escort her to town.

And that is BASICALLY everything Lina is in a nutshell. Tough, intelligent, witty, snarky, but confident in her strengths more than her physical appearance. Stuff like Gourry 'saving' her does nothing to her ego, but being thought of a kid does. And despite this she's still got the common courtesy to understand the intents behind the actions, that Gourry might be an idiot but is still a good guy at heart who wants to make sure she's safe even if she isn't a hot babe, so she puts up with it and doesn't set him on fire. She also never feels compelled to 'show off'. Which she does LOVE doing, but not for the sake of making people stop thinking that she's weak, cause really, she doesn't care that much. She knows her natural awesomeness with shine through in time. No need to rush it.

Hm, I don't actually have many such situations for Ed. Ed's personality is ingrained into my head so thoroughly I don't have to think about it much anymore. And I've read his canon so much I CAN mentally sum up any given situation if necessary. I do this most often with things like dealing with Greed or Izumi.

Riku, while I was playing him, was always based off the moment when he appears toward the end of the game, when he's back to being himself and is full of confident, snarky remarks to everyone.

Killua is harder. I've read his canon a lot but he doesn't have a lot of distinctive moments. There isn't much that's 'purely Killua' I can call upon for him, except in situations where he's topping people (withstanding someone's electrical attack and saying "I've been swimming in this since I was little" or casually ripping out someone's heart) or else moments like fighting with Gon

Vash is another hard one, not cause he doesn't have distinctive moments but because he has them ALL THE TIME and it's hard as hell to tell which of his seventy personas he will draw from for any given conversation. I tend to remember moments like when a gang of bountry hunters came after him and unloaded dozens of rounds each into the shop. Vash pretended to be dead, then got up and hung all over one of them, and everyone was like "lol now you'll really die" and Vash just stood there while they all pulled their triggers. When no bullets hit him Vash pointed his finger at the guy he was draped over and went "The only guy with any bullets left is him" "How did you know?" "I counted". But there are also moments like the genocide song (which is what I based my app around) when Vash runs around shooting his gun and yelling his name and that "ALL OF A SUDDEN, BECAUSE I SAID SO, IT'S TIME FOR A MASSACRE" all to get people to RUN AWAY. But then there are ALSO moments like Vash calling Wolfwood a coward for killing Rai Dei the Blade, or Vash threatening to grope Domenic the Cyclops, or Vash being all weirded out over a transvestite or Vash being REALLY FUCKING EMO over July, or Vash apologizing to a bully and having a bunch of little kids call him a coward and Vash telling them no, you have to avoid trouble =\ or Vash MOPING LOUDLY over how he never really does manage to avoid trouble.

Vash does... a lot. And while he's almost always SILLY he can be about fifty two different kinds of silly. I tend to wing it.

HOWEVER here are some other characteristics I keep in mind, for all my characters.

Ed-

-Ed is nice. He is respectful, usually polite, and never deliberately hurts someone emotionally. And by 'never' I mean only in very rare circumstances and only to people he doesn't like.

-Ed is determined and he doesn't really care if you don't agree with what he is determined about. This is why despite Caesar's hints, Ed is never going to apologize for attacking Roy or admit it was stupid. He doesn't care. Ed stands beside the choices he makes unless HE'S the one to decide it was a bad idea, someone else telling him usually doesn't go over well.

-Ed is oblivious. V. V. oblivious. This extends mostly to anything sexual but covers just about anything emotional. He MIGHT be able to tell if someone is in a bad mood, particularly if it's obvious, but he usually won't have any clue WHY.

-Ed is a genius, only not really. Ed is OFTEN the character that gets expositioned at in the manga. This is because while he's brilliant, it's... limited. Being smart doesn't mean Ed thinks things out all the time, it just means that when he DOES choose to think things out he has a lot of knowledge and critical thinking skills to draw on. However given the choice between 'go for it' or 'think about it' Ed will almost always choose the former, even if it's CLEARLY STUPID AND HOPELESS. When Ed fought Greed the first Greed literally beat the shit out of Ed because Greed had made Ed MAD and Greed had made Ed WORRIED and Greed had taken someone that belonged to HIM and despite the fact that it became PERFECTLY OBVIOUS that Ed couldn't do any serious damage to Greed Ed persisted in attacking him relentlessly to the point where Greed probably could have killed him if he wanted. It wasn't until Ed had nearly been knocked unconscious that he calmed down enough to think "Oh wait, I can alchemize his armor away". And this is the main reason Ed almost never uses fancy alchemy fights. It doesn't occur to him.

-Ed doesn't THINK he is a genius. Despite not actually being humble, Ed isn't arrogant or competitive about his alchemy, his intelligence or his fighting skills except maybe when it comes to Roy and, to a lesser extent, Alphonse (and with Al it's more cause it crushes his ego that his brother is as good/better than him at EVERYTHING). But thing's like "oh I'm stronger/faster/smarter than you" don't phase him in the least. This is why his only reaction to Hugo being a general at fifteen (when Ed is sixteen) is wtf is the matter with your military.

-Ed ISN'T humble. There's a difference between not being arrogant and being humble. Ed has no trouble soaking up praise for just about anything, unless it's something emo. If you compliment him on being zomg awesome with his alchemy, he will happily show off for you even MORE.

-Things Ed never talks about, in order of avoidance: his emo, other people's emo, himself. He WILL talk about someone's own emo if they want to, but he won't ask about it. And he will talk about himself if asked directly, he just doesn't volunteer stuff much.

-Ed almost never takes anything personally, unless your name is Roy, then he takes EVERYTHING personally.

-Ed is more likely to care if you're a girl, and more likely to hit you if you're a boy, but will tell the flat out, shit happens then you die FACTS regardless of gender.

-And ultimately, Ed is detached. There are very few people in camp that can upset Ed without needing to hit one of his major trauma buttons.

-And while I'm at it, his trauma buttons are: His mother's death, his father in general, the... mentality behind what caused him to try to bring a human back to life. For example, Tucker says that he and Ed are like each other because they both know there's nothing wrong with experimenting with human life, Ed did it too. That makes Ed trauma face. Death, in his immediate vicinity. Anyone who has hurt anyone he cares about directly.

Lina-

-Lina doesn't say most of what she's thinking. This is my biggest problem with RPing her, because I have to be careful about how much of what she thinks she says. Lina is actually pretty polite, blunt but not unnecessarily rude, her dialog tends to be short and to the point. But she's a lot more FUN if you say what she's thinking.

-Lina has no need to prove herself, though she doesn't mind if that happens.

-Lina usually only cares when it's something big. Like good people about to die. While she might EXPRESS sympathies over your horrible emo life, it's more that generic "I'm sorry for your loss" kinda thing. She isn't going to emo about it herself and she probably won't empathize with you.

-Lina takes friendship very casually, and the only way to tell how she thinks of a friend from a complete stranger is A) how much she'll rely on them and B) how often she'll talk to them.

-Lina calls people based on what rings best to her, unless their relationship is strictly business, in which case she'll always attach a Mr. or Miss to their name when speaking outloud, but leave that formality off when thinking in her head. Otherwise she can call anyone what the hell ever and have it not matter (to her). I.E. if Lina and Roy ever graduate to first names, she'll probably call him Mr. Roy instead of Mr. Mustang, just because.

-Lina feels no need whatsoever to justify her slaughter of bandits, this is because she honestly doesn't think there could possibly be anything wrong with it.

-Lina is a merchant to the bone, and never passes up the chance to cut a deal.

-Lina doesn't show off her magic for the simple sake of showing off. That she took Roy flying when she arrived was specifically for the intent of impressing him so he'd be more likely to teach her alchemy. No one else can expect to get flights from her Just Because.

-Lina is HAPPY. She doesn't emo. She has no trauma buttons. She DOES have emotion but it takes a lot to make her cry. She can get down, but that takes a built up series of events and she'll probably get over it if you give her pie.

Killua-

-Killua doesn't care. This is number one. He might get annoyed on general principle but he doesn't CARE and you can't possibly do anything to make him lose any sleep unless you are Gon or it somehow involves Gon.

-Killua can kill you. He honestly generally assumes this. It's in his nature to size people up and there are very, very few people in camp that Killua wouldn't look at and mentally calculate how many tenths of a second it would take him to kill you. FORNUNATELY he doesn't act on these impulses, but it's still bred into him.

-Killua has a mischievous sense of humor where he enjoys poking at people, prodding them and generally being a brat. He does this to people whether or not he respects them, but if he LIKES you he'll be more blatant about it (calling Biscuit a hag) but if he doesn't care about you he'll just kinda brush around the issue and see if you do anything interesting.

-Killua is actually nice. A little bit. Somewhere deep down inside. He will sigh and bitch but about 80% of the time he WILL help if he's had any positive contact with you at all. If you are a complete stranger he probably won't help, but he might not be outright cruel. He likes poking at people, not grinding them into the dirt.

-Killua has no trauma. At all. His life sucked. A lot. He has no issues with this. His parents tortured him? Okay. His punishments involve chain and whips and burns and electricity and sensory deprivation? Okay. He's killed probably hundreds of people? Okay. His brother programmed him to run away in the event of encountering a fight where he was not 100% guaranteed to run away? Merely annoying. It's not that Killua represses, he honestly doesn't care which brings me to...

-Killua is kind of nuts. He's well adjusted for a twelve year old sociopath. He knows the difference between right and wrong, he's capable of making friends, he isn't needlessly cruel (most of the time), he has a sense of humor and unlike Hisoka he doesn't have any weird fetishes. BUT none of this changes the fact that he's still detached from reality in a way that makes it impossible to say he isn't a little bit nuts. Killua is also aware that he might be a little crazy, but in his opinion, it's only in areas that don't matter. Afterall, he doesn't WANT to emo over having killed hundreds of people. What a pain.

-Gon Gon Gon Gon Gon Gon Gon and also? Gon.

Vash-

-Vash is an actor. This is probably the number one thing, and the main reason Vash always has so many possible responses to nearly any situation. It's cause unlike my other characters he doesn't have a default personality that we see often. He chooses everything he says and does, no matter how silly he's being. Probably the only time we see raw, unfiltered Vash is when he's super fucking emo.

-Because of Vash being an actor, he lets other people lead. Vash will happily tease or laugh at anyone, but only if they handle it. He won't yell and bitch at people who will break down and seriously cry over it, and he won't show his soft loving side to someone who's going to get all awkward over it. All in all, Vash only goes against the grain of what a person can handle in order to teach them something or leave an impression on them, and he only does THAT when something or someone is in danger. Otherwise he prefers to breeze through people's lives as something pleasant but inconsequential.

-Vash doesn't use people's names very often. This is a subtle thing in the manga, but I'm fairly sure he does it to keep himself from mattering to them. This falls into the 'prefers to breeze through people's lives' categories. He doesn't care if people use HIS name, but he will usually give someone a dubbed name unless he realizes they are somehow irrevocably involved with him. It is NOT a huge thing and I'm pretty sure he does it subconsciously by now. The only time he'll put actual thought into it is if someone is getting too attached to him, then he'll keep distancing them ANYWAY (I.E. Even once Meryl is getting really involved in events with Vash, he rarely uses her name) Wolfwood is different because he... gets it, I suppose. Or maybe because Wolfwood does all the work by insisting on never using vash's name.

-Vash is emo. Vash is easily my most emo character ever. He doesn't show it but Vash? Is just. Sad. A lot. And tired. A lot. He thinks he's worthless. A lot. He really really really wants to not be worthless though.

-What little Vash knows about Earth is from stories and pictures. While he isn't TOTALLY FLOORED BY EVERY SINGLE TREE EVER ZOMG that kind of thing does give him just a general, warm glowly happiness. He's especially fond of red flowers and god save the church if Vash ever gets a geranium. He WILL cultivate it.

-That Vash thinks he's worthless is a him only thing that doesn't apply to other PLANTS. However, Vash is willing to sacrifice PLANTs for human lives in a way that he won't do with humans. This leads to the fact that Vash doesn't consider himself human on more than one level.

-Vash is NOT super secretive. He will tell people about nearly anything if they ask him directly. But he will avoid questions. Either by changing the subject or suggesting that it doesn’t matter. Vash never once in canon comes out and explains what he is, but he never refuses to either. He just... side steps the issue.

-Vash is something of an empath. I draw on this mostly to know ahead of time if the person he's talking to is the type of person he can joke around with or not.

-Vash doesn't love like humans do. This is another subtle thing but very... much... there. Vash loves everyone, and this is honesty. His empathy with everyone makes it so that he cares about everyone, loves them all, will die and protect them all, will cry for them and mean it, won't forget them, their deaths will always hurt him, even a hundred years later. BUT. Because he can't love exclusively, he also can't love as passionately. Human love stories are always about passion and loving one more than everyone else, often to the exclusion of everyone else, making it so they can choose between lovers and brothers and family and friends. Vash cannot and will not do that. It doesn't matter how much they've been through together or how long they've known each other or how much they understand each other. Vash would not kill a complete stranger who is a child rapist and a murderer to save Wolfwood's life, or visa versa. I should have done this BEFORE he went around meeting people at camp but. Uh. I'm totally not used to having inhuman characters who might register on people's power-o-meter!

So, on Vash and what he will look like to people who can see weird shit.

It's a little hard to explain what Vash is, partly because the series never fully explains it themselves. The nearest I can pin down is that he is raw, living, organic energy. PLANTs are used to power pretty much everything in human society at this point, and THEY look like glowing, ethereal angels who can grow and produce just about anything from their body.

What this means is while Vash clearly HAS a soul, I doubt it's significantly different from anyone else's soul, except maybe that it's really emo. His power is physical, not spiritual.

So what does this mean? Well. Up to you, I'm not going to tell anyone what they can or can't do, I assume you know your character well enough. People who can sense/see spirits might be able to tell that Vash isn't human, but I'm not sure if they'll be able to tell he's very powerful. And if there is anyone out there who can sense raw energy, Vash will probably set off all your radars.

If you are the sort that can SEE things... I dunno what you'll see. Vash doesn't have invisible wings or anything weird like that, and his power is contained within him unless he wants it to not be. Probably it would be similar to seeing a big glowy white overlay on Vash's body? I'm tempted to say it works like Chakra, but it doesn't flow through certain parts of his body, it's what he is.

As it is, do whatever you like as far as this goes. For pure curiosities sake I would like it if you told me here what your character will see or notice, if anything. But it's not a big deal and I won't keep tabs on it. Vash never outright SAYS what he is in canon, but it's cause he can usually avoid the subject easily. He doesn't make a particularly big deal to keep his 'secret' hush hush. And I think the only reason he keeps it quiet at all is because the humans of Gunsmoke are likely to be prejudice. One of Vash's earliest desires since childhood is to be accepted for what he is, so he won't mind being recognized as something different than human as long as you don't try to kill him for it (hi Ishida).

1) What are your character's basic stats?

Name: Vash the Stampede

Age: Somewhere over 150, appears 24 and acts it.

Species: PLANT

Birthday: Unknown.

Bloodtype: Unknown, plus probably not normal.

Height: Nooot sure, tall. 6'2"?

Weight: Somewhere in the area of 200, his height and coat ~~and the art style~~ make him look lean, but he's extremely muscular under all that, so maybe 220?

Medical Info: As far I can tell, his physical body is human. He's clearly been operated on in the past, and he does normal things like, eat, sleep, piss, bleed etc. However, canon also mentions that he doesn't require things like food or sleep, so I'm not sure how much of what he does is because he wants to or because it's just normal. I'm also fairly sure that on a molecular level, it would be obvious he isn't human.

Otherwise, Vash is very badly scarred on the majority of his body. He had burns and surgical scars as well as "I got cut open and stapled it closed" scars. He has metal grating drilled into his skin in some places, I suspect these are to protect his vitals more than to keep his skin together.

Also, he's missing his left arm about halfway above the elbow, his left arm is fake but not obviously so, since it's clothed and gloved.

2) Some Canon Stuff

Actual Canon: As we all know, sometime in the new future Earth will be destroyed by the humans who live on it, and it will become necessary to seek out new worlds that can sustain human life.

Trigun is based off this theory and one other. Humanity created a living power source which seems to be able to manipulate or reproduce any known energy. They called these power sources PLANTS. PLANTS, with the exception of Vash and Knives, are all female. They typically look like angels and live inside giant lightbulbs. PLANTs become the new power source for pretty much everything. They can create (or suspend) gravity, make water, make earth farmable, they can outright create certain kinds of foods (this is why salmon is available on a desert planet) and can power nuclear like weapons. Broken or damaged PLANTs will leak radioactive energy, but otherwise there does not appear to be any drawbacks to using them for an energy source...

Except, of course, for the moral issue.

In the beginning (if you can call flashbacks a beginning) of Trigun, a fleet of ships carrying some several hundreds of thousands of people in a sleeping stasis are hurtling through space toward a new planet which they will live on. For all of these ships there is only one person still awake (or, more likely, there is one person awake per ship?) at any given time. Rem is this person.

We don't know how it is that the twin PLANTs came to leave their lightbulbs or why they are male. It is likely an experiment in dealing with 'independents' but for whatever the reason, Vash and Knives were born and Rem raised and took care of them.

When they were about one year old (and appearing to be seven or eight) they stumbled across an old and abandoned medical block of the ship and explored its data files. They happened upon the story of another independent PLANT who had lived on the ship before they were born. Her name was Tesla. The records show and explain all the horrible experiments that were done to her over the course of the next hundred days, until Tesla (who herself looked like a cute six year old girl) was missing limbs and surviving on tubes and ultimately died.

Vash and Knives, utterly innocent at the time, both went somewhat crazy with discovering the heartless way 'their kind' had been treated. They had both been very nervous about meeting other humans than Rem, afraid they would be rejected for not being human themselves. But this event made them think that humans were their enemy.

Vash recovered from the insanity after he stabbed and nearly killed Rem and realized that he loved her and didn't want her to die. Knives blacked out and claimed to have no memory of Tesla, and pretended to be completely innocent and loving as he had ever been.

Then, one day, Knives who was clearly the more genius of the two twins, rewrote the mothership's program to force the entire fleet to crash into a nearby, inhabitable planet.

Rem shoved Knives and Vash into an escape pod, but stayed behind herself. In the last instant, Rem succeeded in manually overriding Knives's program and while many people crashed and died, many still survived the brutal but controlled descent.

Rem herself was like a mother to Vash, he was devastated at her death, and has never forgiven Knives for what he did (though they traveled alone together across the desert for around fifty years despite this). Vash, after witnessing what happened to Tesla, after witnessing humanity struggle to survive upon the planet they later named Gunsmoke, and after witnessing Rem sacrifice her own life to save countless others, decides to dedicate his life to protecting the people Rem died to save.

Vash is not human, and the constant repeating factor of Trigun is that while Vash's ideals are noble, normal people cannot live by them. Others try and they die, and Vash lives on hating himself for every life he fails to protect, every life he influences to die. Similarly, other people can't even function the way Vash does. It is summarized by saying that a normal man will love and fight for and die for his close kin, but to Vash everyone is his close kin. He feels the same way about children as he does about adults, boys as about girls, and villains as saints.

Anyway, back to canon.

Gunsmoke is a desert planet that lives under two suns and (at least) five moons. It is completely devoid of plant life or water as far as we can see. The only known natural living creatures on the planet are the ancient and sentient Sandworms, some insect life and the Thomases which look like a mixture of an anteater and an emu and are ridden like horses. Basically? Crops? Some towns try to grow them, but they often fail. PLANTs support virtually all of the human life on Gunsmoke, and without them everyone there would die.

The problem is, PLANTs can't live indefinitely. They have a natural failsafe built in where once they consume a certain amount of their power, their hair turns black and they die. The purpose of this is to keep any Independent PLANT from getting peevish and destroying all of humanity (like Knives later sets out to do), but it also means that any PLANT used for any purpose will eventually die. And 99.9% of all existing PLANTs never know a life outside of their little lightbulb world.

That said, PLANTs seem to be naturally loving beings. Even Knives was a real sweetheart until he went crazy. And the PLANTs that live inside lightbulbs are not rebellious or hateful toward humans. None-the-less, they do live and die in there, because of humanity. Vash sees this as a tragic necessity, but also the very purpose for which PLANTs were created. He wants to one day change this, but as long as they are on Gunsmoke, it isn't a possibility. Meanwhile, Knives hates humanity, and he hates them even more for using such a more superior race to stay alive. When Knives witnesses a PLANT in a city when she reaches the end of her life, goes into spasms of pain and eventually dies, he goes seriously nuts and kills every single person in the city with a series of sharp feather-like blades.

Thus, this is the basis of the conflict. Knives wants nothing more to destroy humanity and Vash wants nothing more than to protect it. Ironically, the only person Vash appears to have no love for is his own brother. By the time Trigun starts, Vash is quite dedicated to killing Knives, not merely stopping him. Knives takes longer, but eventually gives up that his brother will ever understand how foolish he is, and also seeks to kill Vash. And Vash, at least, understands that he won't survive that final conflict, honestly he doesn't even want to. Vash is very, very tired of life, he sees himself as something that doesn't deserve to exist because with his existance came his brother's, and it would have been so much better if they had never been born. He intends for both 'mistakes' to die together.

And that, in several nutshells, is Vash's canon.

What Audience/Otaku Characters Can Mention To Him: Preeeetty much anything. I don't mind this stuff coming up and will handle it as it arises. The only stuff I prefer to avoid is fanstuff, specifically Vash/Knives. Not that I don't think that's hot, but I have no clue how Vash would handle that sort of thing. But other stuff, his 'deep dark' secrets? Vash can handle himself.

3) What skills or powers does your character have? In particular, list any skills or powers that could be used in a combat situation.

Well, IN THEORY Vash could run power for a half a city if you stuck the right cords into him. But mostly he's just a gun guy.

Vash has a gun with which he almost never misses. He isn't utterly infallible, but... mostly so. He can actually fire a perfect shot with his eyes closed and looking in the opposite direction.

Vash is also a dodge ninja, he regularly avoids bullets and pretty much everything else. And if he does get hit, his coat is bullet proof.

Vash's left arm turns into a gun in the event that he runs out of bullets and doesn't have time to reload with his revolver.

Also, Vash is a PLANT. He heals almost miraculously (bullets push back out of his body) and about halfway through the series he gains control over his own powers. If he can't dodge bullets and can't put himself between someone and the bullets, feathers will grow out of his skin (back, arms, face... anywhere really) and will catch the bullets. He can also do things like create a barrier the size of a small town and protect it utterly from attack, or turn his right arm into an "Angel Arm" a winged energy canon with enough power to destroy a large city. An attack from the Angel Arm actually has it's own gravity pull, when the city July was destroyed a black vortex was created that sucked in every living thing for miles. Later, when Vash was forced to use the Angel Arm again, he directed it upward and the blast traveled across space and hit the Fifth Moon, creating a crater about a third the size of the moon's surface.

Vash's typical methods of fighting involve not fighting if at all possible, and if not possible he will shoot for non-vital areas like shoulders, arms, legs etc. However, he will avoid pulling the trigger at all if he can find a way out of it, it's usually enough for him to dodge his attack and disarm them somehow.

ALSO, Vash is just a little psychic. He can't read people's thoughts directly, but he's... inhumanly empathic. He seems to be closer to Wolfwood in this sense than most, but the entire series is littered with Vash knowing just what to say or just how to act or just when to move to survive or save people. This probably won't effect anything, other than that if you're acting happy but are actually sad? Vash'll know. And if you're acting mean but are actually really nice? Vash'll know. And if you're acting like a grouchy pedophile but are actually just a squishy old grump with a penchant for sewing? Vash'll know.

4) Quick List of Friends and Foes.

Uh. No foes. All friends. Even if Vash has never met you? He loves you. Even if you shoot at him? He loves you, albeit he'll bitch and whine at you loudly. Vash's only foe ever is Knives. And while certain people have more emotional power over Vash (Wolfwood) he really doesn't love these people more than anyone else, he's just closer to them.

5) Other

Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/spit at/step on/etc?

As far as anything that requires me to be there for it and/or involved? Ask but presume no. I'm not very big on bodyswaps, and currently have no interest in that kinda stuff with Vash. Similarly, please refrain from turning into someone 'important' to Vash without asking me. For example, I REALLY don't want him to run into Rem. Really really don't want him to. If you gender switch into Rem or turn into Knives Vash is going to be mysteriously absent.

Otherwise? Go for it. Just understand that if you attack Vash seriously, he will almost definitely avoid it somehow, and even if it's not serious he might randomly turn it around on you. (of course, he might also get hit by it either way, just depends on how Vash is at that moment). HOWEVER. As far as violence or cruelty goes? Free-for-all, he's used to it. You can shoot at him, throw sharp things at him, drop things on his head, push him into the lake. Whatever floats your boat.

Maim/Murder/Death: Vash will not die, ever. So no killing him, not even in a weird way. Similarly, Vash won't kill anyone, ever. However, maiming, as mentioned before? Go for it. He'll get over it.

Vash And Saving Everyone Ever: Okay, if you haven't figured it out yet, Vash has a Jesus complex the size of... well... God. So if you are playing with me specifically, and you try to go kill or hurt someone else seriously. Vash WILL get involved. I EMPHATICALLY REQUEST that for the sake of my sanity, no one kill anyone else while I am playing with them, or even maim them badly unless we've account for Vash attempting to and in some way keeping things from getting worse (I.E., an attempt at killing just results in some maiming).

I also request you not do any killing in Vash's posts, as I'll feel like he's in the area and ought to be responding.

That said, Vash won't magically pop up into other people's posts or threads to stop conflict unless you want me to, or unless I ask and okay it ahead of time. But if you ever need Vash to magically show up and keep your character from killing someone? Give me a ring. He doesn't have to even know who you are, walking into situations full of strangers and walking out as the only one needing to go to the hospital is what Vash DOES.

Vash's Hair Essay

So uh. I haven't even posted and I'm already writing essays!

Let's talk about Vash's hair, and why it being blond again means Vash thinks he died.

So you MIGHT NOTICE that in some of Vash's icons (like the one being used) his hair is blond in the fron and black in the back.

THERE IS A REASON FOR THIS.

Basically, Vash is a PLANT. PLANTs in Trigun are those angelic creatures that live inside big lightbulbs all across Gunsmoke. Humanity LITERALLY cannot survive on that planet without PLANTs. Not only do they supply power (ANY kind of power) but they can make organic matter. This means the majority of the food on the planet is produced by PLANTs, and why they have things like salmon sandwiches in a land with no natural water.

Now, as far as we know, PLANTs are naturally limitless in their power. They are being that were created by man to serve... what they do now. However, because of how much distruction they could cause if one were to... ah.. become an individual, and survive outside of the bulbs they usually live and die in, all PLANTs have a naturally limiter within them. Once they use more than a certain amount of power, they die.

The way to mark how much of their power has been used? Their hair. It gradually turns black as their lives wind down.

Now, Vash lived for 150 years without using up enough of his power to start 'dying'. This includes the time he blew up July with the same 'Angel Arm' he later uses to put a hole in the Fifth Moon. And while Vash apparently never intentionally used his powers prior to that, they did naturally protect him. For all that Vash's body is REALLY badly scarred, it would be much worse if it didn't heal and maintain itself. In the anime he's hardly ever shot, in the manga he gets shot a LOT, and one of the doctors mentions how the bullet 'was pushed out'.

The first time Vash's hair changes is the second time he uses a massive amount of power. At Jeneora Rock, Knives once again forces Vash to use his Angel Arm. This time Vash successfully at least points it UP, and that power is so great that it travels across space and leaves a giant crater in the moon. This event causes a little less than half of Vash's hair to turn black.

However, after that every time Vash uses his power, more and more of his hair turns black. He uses his power again signifigantly to protect Wolfwood's home, and this leave him with only about a fourth of his hair still blond. And then in prepartion for fight Knives, Vash 'stores' nearly all of his power within bullets, til he only has one blond streak of hair left.

For the sake of logic, as best as I can make it, Vash's hair is completely blond again, despite the fact that he is from... post current Maximum chapters. Unlike the anime, Vash in Maximum is VERY intent on killing his brother. He's been planning to kill Knives likely since July, where Knives forced him to kill about uh. 100,000 people. In the anime it says that, somehow, no one in July was killed. In the manga they ALL died, and Vash has some Serious Fucking Emo over this. Plus Knives killed Rem, which is what Vash really hates him for. So anyway. There won't be any happy ending for these two, Vash fully intends to kill Knives the first time he gets a chance. He also fully expects to die in the process.

The problem for me, as a player, is that if Vash comes to camp without fulfilling what he sees to be his Only Purpose In Life he will be. Uh. Emo. A lot. Vash in Trigun Maximum lives only to protect the people of Gunsmoke, that Rem gave her life to save. That is his reason for existing. Otherwise he would've let himself die ages ago, cause he honestly thinks he doesn't deserve to exist. Furthermore, recently in Trigum Maximum Knives slaughtered... a whole lot of people. I'm talking in the millions. Basically he 'stole' the plants from every city he came across, and the people within them were left to starve to death and kill each other and often become cannibles. This went on for seven months and now there are only a few cities where people are still alive and safe. If Vash fails to stop Knives now? Every human on Gunsmoke WILL die.

So! You can see how it would be traumatic for Vash to think he failed. He would, perhaps, eventually get over it. But it would take a long time as he's very old and the knowledge that he failed would mean that his last 150 years of work had come down to nothing, he was unable to protect Rem's people etc etc etc.

Thus, while it hasn't happened in canon yet, I'm sure there will SOON be a point where Vash may briefly appear to be dead while it briefly appears he might've killed Knives as well. Vash is from this theoretical point in time. He believes he successfully killed Knives and can thus enjoy his afterlife.

I will retcon this as necessary. However, it really SHOULDN'T come up in camp. Vash won't talk about how he died, Vash, in general, Doesn't Talk About Stuff, so this will be very easy for him. He believes his hair is blond again because he died, and believes he killed Knives in the process, but he has no real reason to seriously talk out the details with anyone, likely not even Wolfwood.

And before it can be asked. Yes, this is really the best I can come up with x.x Due to the order of events in Maximum, there is no way I could take Vash from any point after Wolfwood's death without triggering major "the planet is being destroyed and I'm not there to save it" trauma. And I consider taking Vash from after Wolfwood's death to be a requirement, since the reunion is part of the reason I apped him.

So anyway. Ignore Vash's icons. His hair is currently all blond.

Oh, and SPEAKING of icons? Wolfwood made like. Pretty much all of them. I have 500 icons from the anime and manga all courtesy of Wolfwood, who owns my soul FOREVER.

Canon:On a desert planet called Gunsmoke, there is a man who was labeled as a natural disaster thanks to the fact that he has a tendency to accidently destroy entire towns where ever he goes, not mention putting a giant crater in the moon. His name is Vash the Stampede, and needless to say the populace is generally terrified of him. At one time he was even wanted for sixty billion double dollars, an ordeal survived only because he has celestial-esque powers than can be reasonably equated to that of a nuke.

In actuality, Vash is a pacifist gunman with really, really bad luck. He's taken the almost literal weight of the world on his shoulders and as such refuses to ever take a life. He's empathic, forgiving, generous, humble, patient and pretty much every other virtue you can think of. And despite having sekretly cosmic levels of emo, Vash makes sure to be perpetually cheery and maintains a sense of humor best described as eccentric, allowing him to break into even the most tense of moments with a gag. He's also as gullible as an extremely gullible thing and will wholly buy into even the most idiotic sob story you can possibly think up. Then he'll cry for you and hug you and promise to make it all better. No, srsly.

Also, he has an evil twin brother bent on the destruction of all humanity, which never stops being the best plot cliche ever.

First she suddenly changes the setting from a Western to B-Horror, then tells me that she isn't a even real Mistress, and finally gives me this dangerous job! People are really going to be trying to kill me! Again!
